To speak of Isla Margarita is to speak of Paraguachoa , the original name of this Caribbean Island that the indians put on the first settlers of this land. The name has a connotation of richness in the sea, of abundant fishing, and in the time where money didn´t matter it meant richness, food, and prosperity.
Come and discover the history of this island in Venezuela. In 1817, during the independent movements of the nineteenth century, the zone was named Nueva Esparta, a name which still exists today. As in Central America and South America, the history of Isla Margarita begins in the Pre-Columbian era, before Christopher Columbus arrived. Until then the only inhabitants were the Guaiquerí people, who lived from fishing. With Spanish colonization also came greed. The invading conquistadors exploited the indigenous population as if they were slaves, to extract as many pearls as possible from the oyster beds of the reefs in the area.
Independence arrived in the nineteenth century at the hands of Simon Bolivar, the great leader of the independence revolution of Central and South America. He was not put off by the superior numbers of the Spanish troops, and his forces won the war, and achieved freedom. Thanks to this they were dubbed the New Spartans, and the region became known as Nueva Esparta.
More recently, in 1974, Isla Margarita received the title of Free Port, something which has doubtless helped the economic development of the island. Thanks to this economic development there are numerous activities available here, as well as many places to go and lots of bars, restaurants, hotels and other accommodation options. This is now one of the most important tourist destinations in the world- Isla Margarita, a tourist destination with something for everybody. |
